Our Judge ~ Nancy Goodwine Wozniak
Judges Statement: I love art for the reasons so many of us do…it is a reflection of how I view the world and a piece of my soul. I recognize an artistic submission for exhibition is an artist’s statement about what moves them, what they find important, and time wisely spent.
I am largely a self-taught artist who found that as fulfilling as my medical career was, I needed another dimension to my life. In 2014 I began to be intentional in making time for my art. Art became that outlet and many times provided solace for questions that medicine cannot always answer. When I resumed picking up my colored pencils, our youngest was in grade school. I chose to work in colored pencils, mostly in small snatches of time, and found the medium that allowed precision, thoughtfulness, no timeline associated with drying, and a means to share the love of creating with our youngest child. Colored pencils also afforded me a flexibility to literally drop what I doing and make my way to the hospital if I was at home and called in.
I have such respect for colored pencils artists because I know the time it takes to produce meticulous work. I learned so much about blending color on the paper in the form of layers, and that paper has more limits than the medium itself. Although I do work in other mediums, colored pencil artwork was absolutely foundational to my process. Because of this, and other experience, I believe I will be a fair-minded judge for those artists who so generously share a bit of their heart and soul in this journey as fellow artists.
Thank you for allowing me to judge for CPSA.
